American Craft Made Baltimore
The world is beginning, at last, to thaw—without a doubt, in the next warm spell, Baltimore will catch the first glimpse of crocuses sneaking up into the sunlight. Having spent so much of these chill winter months indoors, I always find myself eager to get back out and about. This time of year, community events are especially appealing to me. Farmers’ markets, flea markets, estate sales, art walks, food trucks—I’m happy to adventure to anything out of the house, just to savor the milder turns in the weather, and reintegrate into the vibrancy that is the Baltimore community.
And wouldn’t you know, one of my favorite annual events is coming up! Once again, American Craft Made Baltimore will be back in town February 21st-23rd at the Baltimore Convention Center.
American Craft Made Baltimore—the largest juried craft fair on the East Coast—features not only the beautiful works of almost 400 artists, designers, craftsmen, and makers, but also offers a rich series of demonstrations, talks, and opportunities for hands-on experiences. This is the 48th year of American Craft Made Baltimore, and it’s sure to be a good one!
This year, they’ll be offering more in their Let’s Make! series—interactive exhibits and educational activities hosted by local makers to give you some insight into their processes and skills. I always find engaging in a new craft one of the most rewarding experiences. It’s good to do tactile work, get in touch with your hands, and American Craft Made Baltimore offers one of the finest venues to do just that!
And besides all the opportunities for hands-on engagement, American Craft Made Baltimore is one of the finest displays of wonderful, diverse craftsmanship and skills you’re likely to find! The disciplines on display are almost endless—you’ll find jewelers, fashion designers, ceramic artists, painters, weavers, sculptors, silversmiths, printmakers, textile designers, and dozens of other creators, all offering unique, one-of-a-kind wares. And plus, through their School-to-Market program, you’ll be able to see the work of students pursuing craft as a trade, on display and up for sale. What better way to support an up-and-coming generation of artists than by frequenting their new booths? I never walk away from this convention without some wonderful, unexpected find, one whose memories, and presence, I’m sure to cherish for years to come.
So, in the spirit of embracing getting out of the house, as the days finally begin to lengthen and lose their sharp edges, why not give American Craft Made Baltimore a visit? It’s certain to be a highlight of your February!
